Plowing a driveway in Revere

Revere is a coastal city on Massachusetts Bay, and most of it is low and flat. West Revere is mostly residential, while Beachmont, Oak Island and Point of Pines sit closer to the water. Many homes are single- and multi-family houses on small lots, with apartment complexes and high-rises along the beach.

On the city's own winter page, Revere tells residents that plows push snow into driveways during curb-to-curb plowing and cannot lift the blade at each drive. Several passes can bury the end of the drive more than once. The city suggests clearing after plowing ends, or several times during the storm, and shoveling to the side the traffic is moving toward. Snow from driveways may not be pushed into the street, especially a street already plowed, and the city cites Ordinance 12.04.350 for that.

Parking matters here because streets are tight. During a declared Snow Emergency, cars are not allowed on streets signed No Parking, and the city tickets and tows cars that impede removal. Cars moved off the street leave room for plows, which means cleaner curbs and smaller banks at your drive. The city also asks you to keep 3 feet around trash and recycling carts and to clear the nearest fire hydrant. Some banks at corners are pulled back by the city for sight lines, but the bank at your own apron is yours to clear. For homes near the water, wet snow and slush freeze fast overnight, so clear down to the pavement and use ice melter on the walk. Check the city's page before each storm for any temporary signs on your street.
