Everett snow rules you should know

Parking
Everett has no all-winter overnight ban. When the police chief declares a parking ban, cars may park only on the even-numbered side of the street in even-numbered years (odd side in odd years, snow season Nov 1 to Mar 31; the city says even side for 2026). Parking is not allowed on the main arteries (Broadway, Chelsea St, Ferry St and others the city lists). Cars on the wrong side or on an artery can be ticketed and towed. Residents with a parking sticker may use city lots during a ban. Fine amounts not read.
Sidewalks
The owner of land or a building next to a sidewalk must clear it, to at least 36 inches wide, within 12 hours of the city formally ending the snow emergency. The city guide says fines may be issued but gives no amount, and waivers are available for older residents and people who cannot shovel.
Alerts
The city uses flashing blue lights on main roads, its website and social media, robo-calls to registered residents, and Everett Community Television. Constituent Services at 311 or 617-394-2270 can answer questions. Sign up or check.

Plowing a driveway in Everett

Everett is one of the most crowded cities north of Boston. About 18,000 homes fit into roughly 3.4 square miles, and most of the city sits only a few feet above sea level, so it is flat. The problem here is not hills. It is space. Drives are short, lots are small, and there is often nowhere to put the snow.

When the city plows, it does curb-to-curb plowing, and the city guide says plows will push snow into driveways. The plow cannot lift its blade at each drive, so a bank lands at the end of the apron, often right after you cleared it. The city tells residents to wait until the storm and plowing finish before clearing the end of the drive, or to clear it several times. Shoveling snow back into the street is against the city ordinances.

The parking ban shapes your week too. In a declared ban, cars must move to the even side of the street in 2026, and the main arteries are closed to parking. Cars that move out leave streets open for plows, but cars left behind block them and can be towed. If you park in a drive, clear the whole drive, not only the part you drive over. Sidewalks in front of your home must also be clear within 12 hours of the city ending the emergency, so the end of the drive and the walk matter. Plan on two passes: one during the storm to keep the drive usable, and one after the city plow has finished. If the walk is yours to clear, do it in the same visit so the apron and sidewalk line up.
