Plowing a driveway in Medford
Medford covers about 8.7 square miles and has nearly 60,000 residents. The 2020 census counted about 25,770 homes, and the city has single-family houses, many two- and three-family houses and apartment buildings. Many streets are lined with cars on both sides, and a lot of homes have a narrow side drive or a drive shared by two units.
The city sets winter parking rules for the whole season, from November through March or April. In a declared snow emergency there is no parking on Emergency Arteries such as Main, Salem and Harvard streets, and permit parking is not enforced. The city page also sets odd-side or even-side parking by year, so check it for this winter. Cars in city lots must be moved by 7 a.m. after the storm. City plows clear the streets and leave a bank across the end of every driveway. On a street with cars on both sides that bank is taller and denser, and it is the first thing you hit when you try to leave.
Neighborhoods like West Medford, Wellington and Medford Hillside have different street widths, so tell us how wide your drive is and whether it slopes. Medford also has a sidewalk rule: owners must clear the sidewalk within 8 daylight hours after the snow stops, with fines of $50, $100 and $200. If you want your walk handled with the driveway, mention it when you ask for a price, and tell us which units share the drive if the house has more than one.
