Arlington snow rules you should know
- Parking
- During a snow emergency, a parking ban applies for at least 24 hours on all streets and parking lots. Cars that impede snow removal are ticketed and towed. After a ban lifts, cars still may not leave less than a clear 10-foot lane for passing traffic. Fine amounts not stated.
- Sidewalks
- Town bylaws require residents and businesses to clear snow and ice from sidewalks next to their property after a storm (Title III, Article 1, Sections 24-26). The fine is $25 to $50 per day. The page we read does not give the number of hours, so check the bylaw; news reports say 8 daylight hours for homes.

Plowing a driveway in Arlington
Arlington is a hilly inner suburb. Elevation runs from near sea level at Alewife Brook to about 377 feet near Park Avenue and Eastern Avenue, so a drive in Arlington Heights is not like one in East Arlington. Housing is a mix of smaller single-family homes and many two- and three-family houses, so drives are often narrow and sometimes shared.
The town plows main routes first and says residential side streets are cleared within about 8 hours of the end of the snow, with cleanup that can take 24 hours or more. A snow emergency brings a parking ban on all streets and lots for at least 24 hours, and cars that get in the way are ticketed and towed. When the ban lifts, parked cars still must leave a clear 10-foot lane, and on tight streets that rule can keep cars out of the street after the storm.
That is why the end of the drive matters. When the plow goes by, it leaves a bank across the apron, and snow may not be pushed into the street. The town bylaws also require sidewalks next to your property to be cleared, with a fine of $25 to $50 per day, so the walk at the end of the drive counts too. Corner homes are asked to cut a path from the sidewalk to the street. On hill streets in the Heights and on Turkey Hill, a sloped drive can freeze into a sheet under the bank, so clear to the pavement where you can and keep the drain at the foot of the drive open.
