Plowing a driveway in Belmont

Belmont is a small, mostly residential town of about 4.7 square miles. Belmont Hill is the high ground, with large houses and longer drives, and the lower streets around it are denser with homes close together. A drive here can be a short apron on a flat street or a long, curved drive on the hill.

The town's winter notice gives tips that work for any drive. Shovel snow to the right of the driveway as you face the street so it is less likely to land back in the opening when the plow comes. Keep driveway snow on your own property, on the tree lawn or in the gutter, and never put it on the street, the sidewalk or across the street. Wait to clear the end of the drive until the plowing is done, which the town says is generally within two hours of the snow stopping.

Belmont can also declare a Snow Emergency Parking Ban on any street, announced by Reverse 911. Cars left on the street are towed, which leaves the drive and curb clear for plows. Sidewalks next to homes must be clear by 8 p.m. the day after the storm ends, so the walk and the apron are part of the same job. On Belmont Hill, longer drives mean more snow to move. On the lower streets the drives are shorter, but the lawn strip between the sidewalk and the street is the place the town suggests putting snow.
