Malden snow rules you should know

Parking
Winter parking rules start with the first significant snowfall and run 24/7 until April 1. Park on the odd-numbered side of the street in odd years and the even side in even years (the 2025/2026 season was the odd side), with listed exceptions. When the city declares a Snow Emergency (announced at least four hours ahead), cars on main arteries are towed right away, and the page lists a $25 ticket for a Snow Emergency violation.
Sidewalks
Owners must clear the sidewalk next to their property. The clock starts when snow stops or the city declares the end of snow operations. Buildings with fewer than 5 units have 24 hours; businesses and buildings with 5 or more units have 12 hours. Clear 36 inches (42 preferred). The city flyer lists fines: for fewer than 5 units a warning, then $100, then $150; for commercial or 5+ units $100, $200, then $300.
Alerts
Malden Connect is the city's notification system for snow emergency and winter weather alerts (text, phone or email). Trash schedule changes come through the ReCollect app. Sign up or check.

Plowing a driveway in Malden

Malden is a dense city of about 5 square miles with more than 66,000 people. A city housing-plan presentation shows a mix of single-family houses, two-family houses and larger apartment buildings, and about half of the homes were built before 1940. Many driveways are short and narrow, and houses sit close together, so there is not much room to put plowed snow.

Winter parking is strict. From the first big snowfall until April 1, you may park only on the odd-numbered side of the street in odd years and on the even side in even years, with signed exceptions. When the city declares a Snow Emergency, cars on main arteries are towed. If you have a driveway, keep it clear so your car is not on the street when the city plows. City plows push snow to the side of the street, and it ends up at the end of your drive. On streets with cars parked on one side, that can mean a deep, hard bank in front of the driveways.

Winter sidewalks matter here too. Under Malden's ordinance, owners of buildings with fewer than five units have 24 hours after snow stops to clear their sidewalk, and businesses and larger buildings have 12. Fines apply after a warning. If you own a two- or three-family house, the same rule applies to you, so ask about driveway and sidewalk service together. Neighborhoods like Faulkner, Edgeworth, Linden and Maplewood have different street widths, so tell us the width of your drive when you ask for a price.
