Charlestown snow rules you should know

Parking
Boston declares snow emergencies. During one you will be ticketed and towed if you park on a posted snow emergency artery. Park within 1 foot of the curb and at least 20 feet from intersections. Residents with a resident sticker get discounted or free garage and lot parking, starting 2 hours before the emergency; cars must leave within 2 hours after the ban is lifted. The page does not say who declares it. Charlestown streets restricted include Rutherford Avenue, Warren Street and Washington Street.
Sidewalks
Property owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps within 3 hours after snow stops (within 3 hours after sunrise if it snowed overnight), with a path at least 42 inches wide. Fines for not clearing: $50 for residential buildings with 16 or fewer units, $100 for residential buildings with more than 16 units, $200 for commercial. Each day counts as a separate violation, and pushing snow into the street is also fined.
Alerts

Plowing a driveway in Charlestown

Charlestown is a neighborhood of the City of Boston, so Boston's snow rules apply. It sits on a peninsula between the Charles and Mystic Rivers, with two hills, Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill, covered mostly with homes. Much of the housing is colonial and red-brick row houses on narrow streets, so many addresses have no driveway at all. Drives that do exist are often short, tight, or shared.

During a declared snow emergency, parking is banned on posted arteries such as Rutherford Avenue, Warren Street and Washington Street, and cars are ticketed and towed. Residents can use the MGH Shipyard Garage with proof of residency, but it holds only 250 cars. Because so many cars are moved off or squeezed onto side streets, curb space near a drive is scarce, and a city plow bank at the end of a drive can last for days.

Boston also sets a sidewalk duty. Owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps within 3 hours after the snow stops, or within 3 hours after sunrise if it snowed overnight, at least 42 inches wide. Fines run from $50 to $200 depending on the building, and each day counts as a separate violation. Pushing snow into the street is also fined. If you have a drive, a plowing pass after the city plow clears the bank and apron, and a clear walk to the sidewalk, keeps you inside those rules. Steeper streets on the two hills also make hand shoveling slower than it looks.
