East Boston snow rules you should know

Parking
Boston declares snow emergencies. During one you will be ticketed and towed if you park on a posted snow emergency artery. Park within 1 foot of the curb and at least 20 feet from intersections. Residents with a resident sticker get discounted or free garage and lot parking, starting 2 hours before the emergency; cars must leave within 2 hours after the ban is lifted. The page does not say who declares it. East Boston restricted streets include Bennington Street, Boardman Street, Meridian Street, Porter Street, Walley Street and Chelsea Street. Municipal lots #004 (40 Porter St), #005 (166-180 London St) and #026 (36 Bennington St) are listed at no charge.
Sidewalks
Property owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps within 3 hours after snow stops (within 3 hours after sunrise if it snowed overnight), with a path at least 42 inches wide. Fines for not clearing: $50 for residential buildings with 16 or fewer units, $100 for residential buildings with more than 16 units, $200 for commercial. Each day counts as a separate violation, and pushing snow into the street is also fined.

Plowing a driveway in East Boston

East Boston is a neighborhood of the City of Boston, so Boston's snow rules apply. It was laid out on a street grid in the 1800s and is mostly older, closely built housing. In the 2011 figures about two-thirds of occupied homes were rented, so many buildings have several households sharing one drive, or no drive at all.

In a declared snow emergency, parking is banned on posted arteries such as Bennington, Boardman, Meridian, Porter, Walley and Chelsea Streets, and cars are ticketed and towed. The city lists free municipal lots on Porter, London and Bennington Streets. When cars move off arteries, side streets fill up, and the curb outside a drive is rarely open for a plow to turn in. City plows then leave a bank across the end of the drive that can freeze hard.

Boston sets the sidewalk rule here too. Owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps within 3 hours after snow stops, or 3 hours after sunrise for overnight snow, with a path at least 42 inches wide. Fines are $50 for residential buildings with 16 or fewer units, $100 for larger ones and $200 for commercial, and each day is a new violation. Pushing snow into the street can be fined as well. Neighborhoods such as Orient Heights and Eagle Hill sit on rises, so slope is a factor on some drives. For shared drives, a plowing pass that clears the full drive and apron after the city plow goes by keeps cars and walkways usable.
