Peabody snow rules you should know

Parking
When the city declares a snow parking ban, it starts the moment the blue lights around the city are switched on, and no street parking is allowed until the ban ends. Cars can use four city lots (Foster Street, Central Street, Nichols Street and Mill Street) once the ban starts and must leave within two hours after it ends. The fine for breaking a snow or emergency parking ban is $50, and cars can be towed. The sources did not state a standing overnight winter ban.
Sidewalks
Check with the city. We could not find a citywide rule on the city website that makes homeowners shovel the sidewalk, and the online city code could not be read.
Alerts
Peabody Alerts is the city's official notification system. You can pick text, email or phone call. Snow parking bans are also signaled by blue lights around the city. Sign up or check.

Plowing a driveway in Peabody

Peabody is a city of about 54,000 people with older streets near Peabody Square and more suburban neighborhoods to the west. That mix shows up in the driveways. Close to the center, the streets are older and parking is tight. West Peabody was mostly farmland until the 1950s and is more suburban. A driveway in either place still has to be cleared fast once the plows have been through.

When snow is on the way, Peabody can call a snow parking ban. It takes effect as soon as the blue lights around the city come on. Every car must leave the street, and the fine is $50 with the chance of a tow. People who have no driveway can use four city lots. That means more cars end up on private driveways, and a driveway that has to hold two cars needs to be cleared all the way to the street, with room left to pull in and out.

City plows clear Peabody streets curb to curb, so they leave a heavy bank of snow where your driveway meets the road. That bank is packed and wet and is often the hardest part of the job. If you clear the end of the drive before the plow comes back, you will shovel it again. The better time is after the street has been plowed and the ban is lifted.

Peabody has a wide range of road types, from downtown streets around Peabody Square to roads near Brooksby Farm and the Ipswich River. If you live on a shared or very narrow drive, check where the plow will push its snow before you decide where to stack yours.
