Plowing a driveway in Beverly
Beverly stretches from dense streets near downtown and the harbor to quieter areas such as North Beverly, Centerville, Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing. Closer to downtown and Ryal Side, lots are smaller and cars line the curb. Farther out, drives can be much longer and sit well back from the street.
The city invokes a parking ban whenever snow or ice is forecast, and during it no parking is allowed on any street. Residents can use several municipal lots and a reduced-rate MBTA garage on Rantoul Street. That moves a lot of cars into drives, and the city plows then leave a bank across the end of each one. The city also asks residents to take basketball hoops out of the street, since plows can destroy them.
Beverly has a clear sidewalk rule. Owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps 6 hours after snow ends, or by 1 pm the next day if it fell overnight, and make icy sidewalks safe within 6 hours. The fine is $25, and each further 24 hours counts as a new violation. Placing snow on any street or sidewalk is also banned, so plowed snow must stay on your lot. A plowing pass that clears the full drive and the end bank after the city plow goes by helps you stay inside those rules. Longer rural-style drives out toward Beverly Farms are often the hardest to do by hand. If you share a drive with a neighbor, agree before the storm who clears what, since both owners have the same sidewalk and snow-placement duties under the ordinance.
