Westford snow rules you should know

Parking
Winter parking ban runs November 1 through March 31: no on-street parking for more than one hour between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. Parking on the street is also banned during snowstorms and while post-storm cleanup is under way. The fine is $25 and the vehicle may be towed.
Sidewalks
The town does not do winter maintenance on sidewalks and encourages residents to clear the sidewalk in front of their property. The 2025 General Bylaws have no resident clearing deadline or fine. Snow may not be placed on a street or sidewalk the town has already cleared.
Alerts
The town uses Smart911/Rave for emergency notifications and a Notify Me list on its website. Residents who signed up under the old CodeRED system have to register again. Sign up or check.

Plowing a driveway in Westford

Westford is a spread-out suburb of about 31 square miles with over 175 miles of town roads. The town grew as a home for people working in Lowell, then in Boston and the Route 128 tech belt, with villages such as Forge Village and Graniteville. The town's winter parking ban runs from November 1 through March 31. You may not park on the street for more than one hour between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., and you may not park on the street during a snowstorm or while cleanup is going on. The fine is $25, and cars can be towed. For most homes, the driveway is the only legal place for cars on a snowy night.

Plowing starts when 2 to 4 inches build up on the road. Plows work main roads and hills first, and the town says all town roads will be plowed eventually. State roads like Route 110, Route 495, Powers Road and part of Boston Road are plowed by the state, not the town. The town's own page is plain about driveways: plows cannot clear the road without filling in the end of many driveways, and clearing that opening is the property owner's job.

The town asks you to push snow to the downstream side of your drive, and not into the road, and says owners are held responsible for what their contractors do. Westford does not do winter work on sidewalks, and asks residents to clear their own. The town right of way runs up to 15 feet back from the road, so mailboxes and lawn items near the road can be hit. A seasonal plow plan with a final apron pass after the street plow comes through handles the bank at the road.
