Chelmsford snow rules you should know

Parking
Chelmsford does not have a seasonal overnight ban in its posted rules. The town declares parking bans storm by storm and posts them on the town website, social media and cable TV. During a ban there is no street parking, and cars are ticketed and towed at the owner's expense. A January 2026 ban ran from noon Sunday to midnight Monday.
Sidewalks
The town asks residents and businesses to clear the sidewalk in front of their property and to use sand or deicer on ice. The town's posted rules state no deadline and no fine for this. The DPW plows town sidewalks and says it tries to finish within 4 days after a storm.
Alerts
The town says it uses the CodeRED phone notification system. Bans are also posted on the town website, social media and cable TV. Confirm the sign-up is still current with the town. Sign up or check.

Plowing a driveway in Chelmsford

Chelmsford is a large suburb with over 220 miles of town roads, and most of the housing is single-family. The town's snow brochure points out that your front yard often does not reach the road edge, so mailboxes, hoops and lawn items near the road are at your own risk. The Highway Division splits the town into 30 plow routes. Plows start at the middle of the road to open the center, then come back to push snow past the gutter line. That second pass is what leaves the bank at the end of your drive. The town says clearing the drive opening is the property owner's job.

Parking bans are called storm by storm. When one is on, no street parking is allowed and cars are towed at the owner's expense. The town asks residents to remove cars from the road as early as possible, because a parked car is the biggest challenge for plow crews. A clear driveway is the main place to keep cars during a storm. Town bylaw Section 142-34 also bars piling or pushing snow onto a public road or sidewalk, so a driveway plower has to keep snow on your own lot. The town asks people to keep fire hydrants and catch basins clear.

Sidewalks are a separate job. The DPW clears school walking routes first, then Central and Vinal Squares, then other main-road sidewalks, with a goal of about 4 days after a storm. The town asks residents to clear the sidewalk in front of their home and use sand or deicer on ice. If your drive meets a sidewalk, plan to clear a path across it, and keep that snow off the road.
