Plowing a driveway in Dracut
Dracut is a residential town of about 21 square miles with 160 miles of public road. Most homes are detached single-family houses on their own lots, so most plowing work here is a standard driveway cut with the plow bank at the end of the drive. The town's Snow and Ice Division plows the streets, public lots and school complexes. During larger storms it calls in contractors, bringing the total to about 104 pieces of equipment. Even so, a storm takes time to reach every street, so plan for the street plow to arrive after the main snowfall.
The bylaw bans parking on public streets from midnight to 6 a.m., from December 1 through March 15. That helps keep roads clear for plows, and it means every home needs a plan for cars overnight. A cleared driveway is the place for that car. If a drive is full of snow, the car ends up on the street and may get a ticket. The fine in the bylaw is not more than $10, and the town does not describe its storm-ban rules on the pages we read.
Another town bylaw bars anyone but town workers or town contractors from putting snow on a public road or sidewalk where it blocks traffic or the plow, or on a fire hydrant. A private plow service has to keep snow on your own lot. Pushing it across the street into the road is not allowed. The plow comes through after the main storm and pushes a bank across the end of the drive, so a seasonal plow service usually clears the apron last.
